She will appear on Friday before the council chamber, which must decide whether or not to keep her in detention. The mother was placed under arrest warrant late Tuesday. The exact cause of the girl’s death is not yet clear, according to the prosecution, but the medical examiner has already concluded that it was not a natural death.
The victim’s mother is 39 years old. She declared the death of her child Monday morning to the town of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean. The police were then immediately informed of the facts and an investigating judge was seized. The latter as well as the Brussels public prosecutor’s office came down on the spot.
A medical examiner was then appointed and also visited the scene, the family home in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean where the body was located. Certain elements were immediately regarded as suspect, in particular the fact that the death seemed to go back to Friday.
An autopsy was then ordered. The first results show that the death of the child is not natural, but the exact cause has yet to be determined. A toxicological expertise was ordered in addition.
