This Tuesday, Car manufacturer Japanese Toyota has announced that a new vehicle model, in addition to the Yaris, will be assembled
in its factory in Onnaing, near Valenciennes,
in the north. This is good news for the site, whose workforce should increase in the course of 2020.
We know very little, ultimately, about this car. No name, a simple silhouette on a black background, no date for the launch of production and even less technical details. According to Toyota, it will be a “city SUV” exclusively intended for marketing on European territory.
The same base as the new Yaris
This new vehicle will be based on the new modular platform TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture), the same which must also equip the 4th generation Yaris. We can thus deduce that the size of the future SUV will be quite compact.
Toyota had already invested 300 million euros to set up this new platform. A sum to which will be added an additional 100 million. To make the investment profitable, the manufacturer aims to “produce 300,000 vehicles per year. “According to the management of the northern site,” the production of this new model will […] not to be dependent on the business life cycle of a single model. The idea is not only to stabilize the workforce, but also to increase it. It is thus planned to recruit, by the end of 2020, 400 workers on permanent contracts, to reach 4,500 employees.
