Good six weeks after the severe fire in the Krefeld Zoo Demolition work on the burned-out monkey house begins on Monday. As can be seen from a template for the city council, the steel remains of the roof should first be removed. The paper also mentions that the devastating fire killed more than 50 animals. So far, there has been talk of around 30 animals.

According to the council proposal, eight dead monkeys, as well as golden lion monkeys, silver monkeys, white-faced aksis, pygmy marmosets, epaulet fruit bats “and various tropical birds” were among the dead animals. Two chimpanzees had survived the fire injured. According to the zoo, they are on the mend.

Demolition noise poses a challenge for the city

The Rathaus paper, which was already presented on February 6, also describes details of the planned demolition. After the removal of fire debris, glass residues and burned plants, the roof should be dismantled. “This requires the simultaneous use of several cranes.”

The dismantling “can probably only be done from the outside and from top to bottom.” According to the city administration, the demolition noise is “a special challenge, which may necessitate the relocation of the neighboring gray giant kangaroos.”

The family zoos ape house was completely burned down on New Year’s night. According to police investigations, the fire was triggered by a so-called sky lantern with which three women unwittingly started the fire. (AP)
