HEALTH-CORONAVIRUS-UNION-MACRON: EU survival is at stake, Macron told European Council, source
PARIS (Reuters) – The foundations of the European Union are in jeopardy, French President Emmanuel Macron warned during the European Council organized on Thursday by bloc leaders in the context of the coronavirus crisis, we learned from French diplomatic sources.
“What is at stake is the survival of the European project,” if we are not able to develop financial and budgetary solidarity in response to the crisis, he told the 26 other leaders during this consulting organized by videoconference.
According to the French head of state, the very principle of the free movement area born of the Schengen agreements is threatened if the Europeans take uncoordinated measures to close internal borders.
“The risk is the death of Schengen,” he said.
