The General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions has suspended all ordinary communications in prisons and permits, while to compensate for this, the number of telephone calls to which prisoners are entitled has increased.

As reported by Prisons tonight and confirmed by the Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, this decision has been made since the families and the rest of the visits have limited freedom of movement due to the state of alert decreed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Prison sources have reminded ‘Efe’ that, for the moment, they have only been detected five positive cases of coronavirus in the penitentiary setting: a worker from the Penitentiary Work Entity, three workers from the Aranjuez (Madrid), Navalcarnero (Madrid) and Melilla prisons and one prisoner from Alava. Prisons has suspended all scheduled exits and any other, except for reasons of force majeure or need.

Inmates will now have a greater number of authorized telephone communications, especially with his lawyers so that his right to defense is guaranteed. The sources have specified that no notable incident related to COVID-19 has occurred in prisons. Just a “nervous” situation in a module of the Fontcalent prison (Alicante) when the false rumor that there was a positive case has been spread.

According to sources, the director of the center has explained the situation, the prisoners have gone to their cells and there has been no incident.
