SANTE-CORONAVIRUS-FRANCE-DISNEY: Disney +: delayed launch in France, reduced broadcast quality in Europe
PARIS (Reuters) – Disney +, the video streaming platform of the entertainment giant Walt Disney, announced on Saturday that it postponed its launch in France by two weeks, that is to April 7, at the request of the French government in response to concerns over network congestion.
In a press release, it also indicated that it had agreed with the European Union that the broadcast quality offered to European subscribers would initially be reduced, for the same reasons.
While video services can represent up to 60% of internet traffic on fixed and mobile networks, the launch on March 24 in Europe of Disney + raises fears of a slowdown in the connection of users.
“Still a little patience for our French fans”, can be read on the Twitter account of Disney + France.
“Our Disney + streaming service is coming soon … but at the request of the government, we have agreed to postpone the launch until Tuesday, April 7, 2020”.
Friday, Orange CEO Stephane Richard asked for a postponement to prevent the saturation of telecoms networks already congested by Netflix, YouTube and telework due to the containment strategy implemented to counter the epidemic of coronavirus.
