This measure will reduce video traffic to the SvoD platform by 25% in Europe. The goal is to unclog network infrastructures.
Netflix has decided to voluntarily lower the quality of its video streams in Europe for a period of 30 days, by reducing the “bit rate”, that is to say the amount of digital data sent per second (between 8 and 18 Mbit / s for HD for example). The goal is to drastically reduce the traffic generated by homebound users. “We estimate that this will reduce Netflix traffic on European networks by around 25% while ensuring good quality for our users”, Netflix said in a statement.
This initiative follows a discussion between Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the internal market, and Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, last Wednesday. “Telework and streaming are very useful, but the infrastructure can be severely stretched. To secure Internet access for everyone, let’s go to standard definition when HD is not necessary “said the Commissioner in a tweet. According to Cloudflare, Internet traffic increases by 10 to 40% in countries affected by Covid-19, depending on the degree of containment.
