new version with ANC and increased autonomy

The second version of Sennheiser’s high-end True Wireless is official. No revolution in the program, but a salutary upgrade in this market evolving far too quickly. Small overview before the test early next week, time to go around the beast.

The second version of Sennheiser’s high-end True Wireless is official. No revolution in the program, but a salutary upgrade in this market evolving far too quickly. Small overview before the test early next week, time to go around the beast.

An almost equal shape

Unless you really have an eye, it’s hard to tell the difference between V1 and V2. The earpiece is of equivalent size, very slightly thinned on its internal face according to the information which has been communicated to us. The product remains on a cannula principle (plastic rod) very short and not very thick, and it is not (without too much spoiler) not a surprise to find that the comfort is excellent. As on the first version, the Momentum True Wireless 2 have an IPX4 certification, which protects them from all forms of splashing water.

In small aesthetic detail, we notice the appearance of a matrix of 3 x 3 holes on the external face of the headphones, probably linked to the noise reduction microphone. On the inside, the same system of metal connectors (recharging). Finally the appearance of small optical sensors for the pause / automatic playback option, a function already existing on the first models. The controls will always be based on a tactile surface (simple touch and not a swipe). With different functions depending on the left earpiece and the right earpiece, these commands are very customizable and visibly complete, allowing you to change the reduction mode, navigate the tracks, change the volume or call the voice assistant.

The refill box is almost a clone of the first, same dimensions and same fabric covering particularly pleasant to use. We can still note the darker gray color of Momentum True Wireless 2. A white version white version will also appear.

LED indicator for the state of the battery, USB-C, but unfortunately no induction, which is frankly a shame considering the pricing orientation. A defect that they share with Sony WF-1000xm3.

Noise reduction, battery life, and always the best sound?

Big novelty and decisive function since the appearance of Airpods Pro, active noise reduction finally makes its appearance. Sennheiser has a lot of experience in this area, but we will wait to see if it materializes here.

This function is obviously accompanied by Transparent Hearing (ambient sound), as well as an active noise reduction during calls. 2 microphones are used for each of the functions.

Second striking novelty, the transition from a 4 h autonomy to a 7 h autonomy (ANC deactivated), and 21 h counting the box, a figure already much more in the current standard. It will especially be necessary to check the performances in ANC mode.

The Bluetooth chip remains type 5.0, for support for SBC, AAC, AptX, and obviously LHDC codecs. The latter is a competitor to the LDAC created by Savitech and Huawei, supported among others by Sennheiser. A Multipoint functionality was mentioned during the presentation, but we will check if it is indeed a true multipoint (connection in audio profile on at least 2 products) and not a truncated function as on the Sony WH-1000xm3.

The transducer remains a dynamic model of 7mm, to see if the sound remains the same or improves further. If the sound signature depends on everyone’s tastes, the Momentum True Wireless 1 are still in the best of it. Like any modern Sennheiser product, the dedicated Smart Control application provides access to numerous settings and the home equalizer.

Small disappointment on the type of pairing, which remains in master-slave mode and not in sniffing mode (the second intercepting the flow of the first). Mono mode only exists with the right earpiece.
