Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-hansgrohe) extended his overall tour of the long-distance cycling trip from Paris to Nice. The German road master from Berlin finished second in the 15.1 km individual time trial in Saint-Amand-Montrond six seconds behind the Danish day winner SOren Kragh Andersen (Sunweb).
Schachmann is now 58 seconds ahead of Kragh Andersen in the overall standings, followed by his team-mate Felix Grobschartner (Austria / 1: 01 minutes). Cologne’s Nils Politt (Israel Start-Up Nation / 1:05) is in fourth place.
The longest leg of the long-distance journey is on the program on Thursday. Between Gannat and La Cote-Saint-Andre, the athletes have to cover 227 kilometers. The 78th edition of the “Journey to the Sun” ends after a total of 1217 km next Sunday in Nice.
Some teams, including the British top team Ineos, had decided not to start due to the corona crisis. The race has been held “behind closed doors” since Monday, following an order by the French government that prohibited events with more than 1000 participants on Sunday evening. Buffer zones are set up on the podiums in the start and finish area over a length of 100 and 300 meters, respectively, and access to the public is restricted there.
