Vitamin C is one of the most prized ingredients in skin care products because it can help address many problems, such as skin aging, hyper-pigmentation, fine lines, acne scars and dry skin.
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals, these unstable cells that cause a breakdown in the production of collagen and elastin, which causes aging of the skin, which sags and loses its tone.
“Antioxidants like vitamin C prevent or reduce the damage that would have been caused by free radicals, choking them in the bud, and keep our skin safe, healthy, plump and youthful,” says director Vishul Gudka clinic and chief practitioner at The Aesthetics Room.
Not only does it prevent damage, but it also stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. It is therefore not surprising that it is used in many anti-aging products.
“When applied locally to the face, it forces the skin to heal. This triggers the production of collagen and elastin. The acidity also removes dead cells from the surface of the skin, leaving it smoother and more luminous, ”adds our expert.
Vitamin C inhibits the production of melanin, which helps prevent the appearance of dark spots, age spots and hyperpigmentation, while it also acts as a lightening agent to fade dark areas of the skin, without altering the complexion.
Vishul Gudka suggests using Vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid, as it is the most effective form for penetrating the skin barrier. But how should it be incorporated into your skincare routine?
“When you buy vitamin C in serum, make sure it is present in dark bottles and that it is almost translucent,” recommends our expert. Vitamin C turns brown when it oxidizes due to exposure to light and air … this means that the product itself has broken down and is ineffective. ”
He added, “The rule of thumb here would be to apply vitamin C before a moisturizer, so that you place it under the cream and so it is less exposed to the air. Use it in the morning to protect your skin from free radicals and use it in the evening to repair the oxidative damage of the day. ”
Our specialist also recommends using vitamin C in combination with other antioxidants such as vitamin E to increase efficiency. Products such as SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic and SkinMedica Vitamin C + E Complex contain these two ingredients.
