Strangers ravaged ex-Formula 1 driver Ronnie Peterson’s grave last weekend, the Blick newspaper reports. During the night on Sunday, vandals violently knocked over the Swedish tombstone and defaced three other graves in the cemetery in Orebro.
“I’m shocked. It’s just terrible,” Peterson’s daughter Nina Kennedy is quoted as saying. The background to the crime is still unclear. However, the police have already been reported.
Peterson died in 1978 after an initial accident in Monza. The Lotus pilot had broken his legs in the accident, but then died in the hospital after a fat embolism – at the age of 34.
With Peterson’s death, the first and only World Cup title for his team-mate Mario Andretti was calculated. The Swede ended the season as runner-up despite his death.
