Coronavirus: Why did politicians take so long to announce the decisions last night?

Many Belgians wonder this morning: why did Belgian political leaders take so long to announce the decisions last night? We have seen some publish photos of skeletons on social networks, in reference to their potential death, pending strong measures.

Because the ministers took a long time to conclude last night, due to many differences. The main divergence between the North and the South of the country concerned schools. Should they be closed or not? This question poisoned for several hours the meeting between the representatives of the different governments.

On the French-speaking side, the wish was to close them. On the Dutch-speaking side, there was reluctance to do so. There will have to be a suspension of the meeting, eye-to-eye discussions, a French-speaking threat to take the decision alone… To finally arrive at this compromise solution: the schools are not closed, they keep the capacity for welcoming children mainly nursing staff. But the lessons are interrupted.

This was not the only difference around the table last night. Two days ago, the French and Flemish governments had already had differences of opinion on the ban on visits to nursing homes.

And the political debates are not over. In the coming days, the question of compensation for traders injured by the closings will come to the table. But also support for the Horeca sector, small businesses … Between the measures to be adopted and the cost for the budget, we are promised new major political wars.
