Washington. According to a media report, the US government has received ongoing information on the corona situation in China from its own experts at the World Health Organization (WHO).
Senior US health officials appointed by President Donald Trump “regularly consulted at the highest levels” with WHO officials as the corona crisis unfolded, the Washington Post said on Sunday, citing unnamed international and US officials.
Trump ordered US contributions to WHO to stop on Tuesday last week. He made the organization responsible for the many deaths in the crisis and accused it of dramatically worsening the pandemic with mismanagement and reliance on information from China. Over the next 60 to 90 days, his government would review the role that WHO had played in “poorly handling and hiding the spread of the coronavirus.” That’s how long the payments were on hold.
Trump’s move met with international criticism – also because the US President himself is accused of having downplayed the crisis for a long time.
17 officials from the Ministry of Health, including 16 from the CDC health authority, worked in the WHO headquarters in Geneva in January, the newspaper quoted a ministry spokeswoman. But that does not change the information that has been received from the WHO leadership. She also questioned why WHO “didn’t put China under harder pressure”. China had held up WHO experts for weeks to enter the country, and WHO had not even criticized China for the delay, but rather praised the transparency.
At the end of January, Trump had still praised Beijing’s corona strategy. “China has worked very hard to contain the corona virus. The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency, ”he tweeted.
