No. Mazda 3 and Kia Ceed they are a couple of models with a lot of character. To the Mazda They have just given you a refreshing rejuvenating bath: after having been on the market for less than a year, you now receive a new 150 hp gasoline engine. What the Mazda 3 is capable of with this new motorization, it will show in this confrontation with the Kia Ceed.
This is what they offer, the Kia offers a larger cabin
With equal width (1.80m) and height (1.44m), the Mazda 3 is 14 centimeters longer and offers eight more centimeters of battle. The Japanese should offer more space … error. It should, theoretically. In practice it offers less space. And the explanation lies in the following: the Mazda offers less headroom – in fact, more in the rear than the front. Reason: the compact Japanese has its front seats in a higher position than those of the Korean.
And the Mazda 3’s roofline is very pretty, by the way, but precisely compromising headroom. Thus, despite having better padded and firmer seats, if we measure 1.80 m in height or more, we will not be as comfortable. In this sense, eThe volume of the boot is also penalized by the design of the roof.
When the rear seats fold down, the Ceed offers 265 liters more. To get an idea, there are eight more boxes of beer (24 x 0.33 l), to which you only have to lift 60 centimeters in the Ceed. And is that the loading edge of the Mazda 3 is 16 centimeters higher.
In any case, at the controls of both compacts the driver will feel good. With a driving position Fine, spartan and with everything at hand, and with all the services concentrated in a central rotary control, in the Mazda you will be little distracted at the wheel. Kia uses many more buttons, but they are mostly placed within arm’s reach and are large enough. Driver’s level of distraction? I go down here too, because teverything is very intuitiveor. If you have to put a but it is the rearward visibility, especially in the Mazda.
This is how they drive: the Mazda’s engine is a pleasure
A gasoline engine has never been better in a Mazda 3. The well-known 2.0 liter with mild hybrid and deactivation of cylinders now delivers 150 hp. The extra 28 horsepower is much more noticeable compared to the Skyactiv-G 122 than the 30 hp less force in respect to the Skyactiv-X. The four-cylinder engine is quiet and progressive, but like its mechanical siblings, it needs to go high on laps. In fact, it is from 3,500 and 4,000 rpm when the engine shows the best of the day. This is mainly due to the absence of turbo and its torque of only 213 Nm at 4,000 revolutions (the same as in the 122 hp!). A little consolation: the Short and precise six-speed manual gearbox makes the change a pleasure. And in all its serenity, the two-liter four-cylinder looks pretty nice.
In Spain for now it is not sold is an engine and Mazda offers the power level of 122 hp in the case of the skyactiv-G block and 180 for the skyactiv-X.
The engine of the Kia Ceed is not far behind
A total of 140 CV full of life await us at the Ceed. Thanks to the turbo, the 1.4-liter displacement is enough to show temperament even at 2,000 laps. By overtaking, the Korean does not give the Japanese colleague any chance: with its highest torque (242 Nm) and at much less speed (from 1,500 rpm), you can forget about the six-speed change of the Kia, of longer routes and not so precise.
Bumpy stretches are also easier with the Ceed. In general, the chassis responds smoothly, skillfully swallowing all the imperfections of the firm. The stiffer Mazda lacks the necessary freshness, especially when it bounces. By going through highway junctions over manhole covers, the Japanese compact becomes less stylish. Instead, on good firm, and especially on straights, the Mazda 3 recovers its splendor, especially thanks to its balanced firm and precise steering.
