The coronavirus in Belgium is forcing politicians to put in place new measures to enable the population to better manage this unprecedented health crisis.
Federal Minister of Economy Nathalie Muylle (CD&V) announced Thursday that she was extending the proposal for additional parental leave to all parents of children up to 12 years of age or of children with disabilities. “This will help parents to combine work and childcare during a gradual restart”, she declared in plenary session of the Chamber, in response to the deputy Ecolo Marie-Colline Leroy.
Nathalie Muylle announced Tuesday that she would submit to her government partners MR and Open Vld a draft order of special powers opening the door to additional parental leave for isolated teleworkers (single or separated parents) in order to take care children during confinement. So on Thursday, she indicated that she was expanding this project to all parents of children up to 12 years of age or of children with disabilities.
In a press release, the League of Families welcomes this announcement. Tuesday, she “regretted that the measure proposed by Minister Muylle does not benefit all parents and that the remuneration for this leave is not improved. In two days, the measure has evolved on the first point, but everything remains to be do on the second, “she notes.
