How the corona virus affects parking spaces

A short interview with the operator of the panorama parking lot Friedburg, Norbert Unterrassner, about the impact of Corona on tourism and how to deal with it.

How much does Corona affect tourism in the region?

Corona hits our region very hard. We are a pure tourism region with the Hohe Tauern National Park. There are a lot of tourists here who are out and about in summer and winter. We had to close officially before Easter, which was a big financial disaster for many companies. Of course, the artisans in the region are also affected, they also live from tourism.

What are you currently having particular problems with?

Because all of the hotels, parking spaces and accommodations in Austria were officially closed, we too have now closed for the fifth week in a row. Another problem will be that the borders may remain closed for longer. The main problem is that there is really nothing we can do. We don’t even know when we can open our factories again. We have a restaurant on the pitch where we are not allowed to cater for guests. There is an option to arrange a pick-up service, but it is not worth it for us.

How long can your place or the holiday region “survive” without guests?

This question is difficult to answer. There are companies that have made large investments in the past, but now the situation is difficult. But there are also companies that have invested less in recent years and are easier to survive. But in general the question is difficult to answer. It is difficult to estimate how long this will take. It’s also about whether guests start traveling again when the borders are open again.

We will surely survive, but it also depends on how long the measures take. It is the same as in other regions. Maybe afterwards all tourism will recover faster than we thought. Of course we do not hope that a second wave will come and that we will have to introduce restrictions again in Austria, because then it would be a big problem for everyone.

Are there corona funding programs for tourism companies in Austria?

Yes, there are packages of measures that are only now being submitted and checked. There are also certain templates for this. There are many companies that may not get any money out of this pot. The exact criteria have been or are still being worked out. There are always additions, renewals and that would be too early to talk about the packages. There are many medium-sized companies in Austria and you have to make sure that everyone can get something from these funds. For example, there is a package of measures for debt: the debt does not have to be paid for half a year, the credit line is simply extended.

How do you prepare the place for the time after Corona? Will there be special hygiene measures?

We have maintained our place well during this time. We make investments every year so that everything is beautiful again and so that we can offer something to the guests. We have a wide range of options and many hiking trails start from us from the parking space. We are constantly working to refine and improve the offer. This is very important for us.

Many guests appreciate our place because they want peace and quiet: everyone has their own place, it’s manageable, it’s family. We have noticed that this is important. We see this as important for the time after Corona.

Hygiene measures in the sanitary area have always been in any case, we will of course further tighten them. Of course, we also have to wait and see what the government imposes on us, i.e. whether we should work with face masks or how much space there is. We have the advantage that we are a small place and do not have this large crowd.

Motorhomes also have their own sanitary areas in the motorhome. If the water withdrawal and disposal station are adapted to the requirements, hygiene is not the big issue. The guests are in their own four walls, they have everything with them and they only need to keep their distance from their neighbors. This is possible on our pitches, distance can also be kept well when fetching water.

Do you expect a rush or slow travel this year?

I would like to see this rush. We got third place at promobil last year best parking spaces in Europe made and we are very proud of it. There is also a book “The most beautiful parking spaces in Austria”, where we can be on the front page. This gives us a certain level of awareness. We have built up many regular guests in recent years and hope that these regular guests will come back to us when they are allowed to travel.

Of course, it is now important that the border openings and freedom of travel are relaxed again by the individual states so that people can travel again. Of course, Austria and Germany advertise that people should stay in Germany to promote domestic businesses. But I still believe that Germany and Austria have a good relationship and the small border crossing opens so that people can come to Salzburg and Tyrol.

Spectacular sight: The Krimml waterfalls

The three waterfalls have a total drop of 380 meters and are best discovered on the waterfall path. This leads over four kilometers to numerous pulpits and viewpoints, which not only allow breathtaking views of the waterfalls, but also of the surrounding landscape. It takes about a little over an hour to get there, which is also possible for families with children. The WasserWelten adventure center is located directly at the parking lot of the waterfalls. It combines fun and learning with experiments, short films and an outdoor water playground. More information can be found here:
