SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mutzenich expects that in view of the Corona crisis, the Bundestag will agree in the next few days to waive the diet increase, which is usually due on July 1st. Mutzenich told the newspapers of the Funke media group in an interview published on Monday that he was “confident” that the political groups would “find a common solution” during the week.
The chairman of the left-wing group, Dietmar Bartsch, called the resignation a symbolic act and “a matter of course at this time”. Union leader Ralph Brinkhaus also told the Spark newspaper: “More money for politicians, so higher diets on July 1 – that would not be a good sign.”
The consensus on waiving the increase in diet had already emerged in the past few days. There have also been talks between the political groups about the waiver.
The members of the Bundestag currently receive EUR 10,083.47 a month. The diets are usually adjusted annually by July 1st, based on the nominal wage index determined by the Federal Statistical Office. Since nominal wages grew by 2.6 percent last year, the diet would normally increase to € 10,345.64.
