CORONAVIRUS: THE MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL CANCELED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ITS HISTORY

GENEVA (Reuters) – The jazz festival held every summer in the Swiss city of Montreux cannot be held this year due to the pandemic of new coronavirus, its organizers announced Friday.

This cancellation is a first since the creation in 1967 of the Montreux Jazz Festival, which brings together nearly 250,000 people each year on the shores of Lake Geneva.

While “the majority of the necessary hygiene and social distancing measures” are maintained in Switzerland despite the gradual relaxation of certain restrictive measures put in place in response to this health crisis, “it is today impossible to envisage a event of the magnitude of the Montreux Jazz Festival in July “, note the organizers of this event in a press release.

“The Festival is working on postponing the next edition of the concerts already announced,” they add, adding that the 2021 edition will be held from July 2 to 17.

The Montreux Jazz Festival therefore extends the list of cultural events around the world that have been postponed, canceled, or adapted due to the health context, such as the Cannes Festival or the Coachella Festival.
