The psychological fever for being stocked with toilet paper was short-lived. When we all already had our 250 rolls “just in case”, with which they started until challenges At Tik Tok, people understood that they no longer needed to continue going to the supermarket at 8 in the morning to take 8 packages. But it does not end there. Then came the fever of home baking. And above all, the most wanted: yeast. We have been without it for weeks and now natural alternatives run like a powder fuse in the networks because, to see if not how the cake is going to upload us.

What we did not think when we went en masse for toilet paper and yeast is that the gray hair and the roots of our dye (oh, first world problems), they would come out long before we ran out of the first pack of toilet paper rolls. And what we also did not think is that the hairdressers would shut down and we would be left with an unwanted new look that made another product an object of desire in supermarkets: home dyes.

According Rafael Rocha, beauty expert at the consultancy Nielsen: “Hair coloring has been falling for many years because going to the hairdresser to dye your hair has become widespread”. But it assures that the coloring products have grown 36% in the accumulated of the whole coronavirus crisis (according to Nielsen’s data). Rocha assures that it is the first time that sales of this product have skyrocketed like this since consumer studies were carried out: “It didn’t even grow that much during the crisis.”

Retouching the color at home became a necessity for many, whose gray hair covered their hair at full speed and could not do much more than cover them for a while with a color spray.

Calm down, there are still dyes. They are sold like churros at Christmas, but there is. If you were always one of those who trusted your hair to your trusted hairdresser and now you have to throw skill, take note of everything there is so that you can choose what works best for you. Here you have the most complete guide to the home dyes of the supermarket.

But before you know everything that is available, you have to know that there are several types of homemade dyes:

Permanent dyes

On the one hand, there are the PERMANENT dyes. Yes, they cover gray hair 100% but they do not go away easily with the washes. That is, if you are wrong about the tone, they are not the “wash and go” type. They are perfect to give intensity to a tone or to cover roots and grays if you know for sure which one is yours.

Semi-permanent dyes

Semi-permanent dyes They do not offer the same level of coverage as a permanent, although you will notice your covered gray hair. They are also perfect if what you want is to nuance the root or give a little intensity or darkness to your color. They resist less than the permanent ones: about 4 or 5 washes. And they don’t lighten the hair.

Discoloration

Careful with this. These yes serve to lighten hair but if you don’t know how to use it or your hair is weak, better leave it for later. You can survive, seriously.

Natural dyes or synthetic dyes

It often depends on this that users suffer allergies. Synthetic dyes are more likely to cause them. Of course, the variety of tones is much wider than that of natural dyes. They stain due to oxidation of the hair and are more aggressive.

The trend is do away with ammonia, the ingredient that has always been at the center of all controversies for being more abrasive and harmful. The objective is to change it for another similar alkaline ingredient or incorporate ingredients that have a softening and repairing effect. And if possible, natural.

How to choose the right color

To find out, they have helped us Mª Carmen Medrano, scientific spokesperson for Garnier and L’Oréal Paris and Irene Rosado, head of training for Garnier and L’Oréal Paris.

According to hair tone

“When choosing the tone that we are going to apply we have to take into account that tints have a maximum lightening power of two or three shades. If, for example, our natural tone is light brown, we cannot choose a light blonde, since we will not get that color, we would have to choose a light brown or dark blonde. If what we are looking for is to darken our current tone we could apply the tone as dark as we want, although always it is advisable to darken little by little so that the change is not so drastic”, The experts recommend us.

According to skin tone

“Actually, the tone we have is not important here, but what color do we want to get taking into account the restrictions that we have discussed before ”, they explain.

If you have gray hair

The two experts advise us apply a permanent color to ensure high coverage of gray hair. “When we talk about the first gray hairs, we can choose to use a semi-permanent coloration. In this case, it is important to check in the instructions of the cases if the percentage of coverage provided by the chosen shade is in accordance with the one we are looking for or if, on the contrary, it is not recommended for hair with a high percentage of gray hair ”.

If the hair is previously dyed

Here we must bear in mind that we cannot clarify the tone by applying another tint on top, since stain on stain has no rinsing power. “We must maintain the tone that we have applied before or a darker one,” they add.

And now, let’s go to what’s left in the super …

HOW TO APPLY THE TINT

Follow the step by step and avoid disasters.

  • Put on gloves and an old cape or T-shirt to avoid staining your clothes or skin. Pour the dye into one and dilute it, in the case of the dye, with the oxidant (the developer) and it is henna, with water. Follow the instructions in each case. Stir with the paddle until you get a homogeneous mixture. Protect sensitive areas of the skin such as the forehead or ear area with a little petroleum jelly.
  • Apply the product only at the root. It will improve your whole look when the hairdressers reopen. In addition, this way you avoid overloading your hair with pigments. Do it with dry hair, without washing, applying the product with the paddle starting from the hairline on the forehead, from side to side (from ear to ear). Then make a line in the middle and apply the color to the root that has grown.
  • With the end of the blade, help yourself to separate the hair into sections and continue applying the color. Always take small locks and few amounts.
  • When you have applied the product, leave it to act for 30 or 35 minutes in the case of dye and 1 hour in the case of henna.
  • Finally, rinse abundantly with hot water. Apply shampoo and conditioner. It is recommended that you also add an extra hydration treatment such as a mask.
