The number of corona deaths in Brazil continues to rise rapidly. The Ministry of Health said on Friday evening that 751 people had died within 24 hours after being infected with the novel corona virus. It was the largest increase in deaths in a day to date. According to the Ministry, there are now a total of 9897 corona deaths in Brazil. The number of confirmed infections increased by more than 10,000 to a good 145,000 within a day.
The largest Latin American country could develop into a new hotspot for the corona pandemic. Brazil now has more deaths than Germany and has the seventh highest number of corona deaths worldwide.
According to the Brazilian authorities, a total of 145,328 infections have now been detected. However, experts question the official statistics because of the low test density, they assume that the number of infected people in Brazil could be up to 20 times higher.
The epicenter of the Corona crisis in Brazil is the state of São Paulo with its almost 46 million inhabitants. More than 41,000 corona cases and 3,400 deaths have already been recorded there. Schools and most stores in the state have been closed since late March. Exit restrictions were extended to late May on Friday despite warnings from President Jair Bolsonaro.
Brazil’s right-wing radical leader has repeatedly spoken of a worldwide “hysteria” in connection with Covid-19. In his view, the exit restrictions imposed by the states unnecessarily damage the economy. He regularly overcomes contact restrictions by being seen on the streets of Brasília or at crowds at events of his supporters.
