The incumbent chairman of an independent journalists’ association has been detained in Communist Vietnam. Nguyen Tuong Thuy is accused of anti-state propaganda.
According to relatives and the human rights organization “Defend the Defenders”, journalist Nguyen Tuong Thuy was surprised by the Vietnamese police in his house.
Security forces had moved his house, taken the cell phones from all of his relatives and searched the building. Then the officers would have confiscated Thuy’s computers and other personal items. Then he was removed.
Corruption and other grievances denounced
Thuy has made a name for himself as a blogger denouncing social injustice and corruption in the Southeast Asian country. Relatives of the 68-year-old now fear that Thuy could be kept in isolation for months.
The chairman of the journalists’ association IJAVN, Pham Chi Dung, was arrested last November. Human rights activists criticize that the government in Hanoi had intensified the pressure on dissidents before the 13th Communist Party congress scheduled for January 2021. After Dung’s arrest, harassment against leading members of the journalists’ organization had intensified.
