Bruno Labbadia celebrated his dream start in Berlin with a clenched fist, his players cheered emphatically after four goals in the city duel: Hertha BSC clearly won the initially dreary ghost derby against the promoted Union and took revenge for the disgrace in the first half after an increase in performance. In the empty Olympic stadium, the blue-whites prevailed 4-0 (0-0).
In the first duel 202 days ago, the climber from Köpenick had triumphed in the Alte Försterei over the Alte Dame (1-0) – now Hertha BSC secured the unofficial city championship with the clear success.

The second victory in the second game under the new coach Labbadia was made perfect by captain Vedad Ibisevic (51.), Dodi Lukebakio (52.), Matheus Cunha (61.) and Dedryck Boyata (77.). After the excitement for the goal celebration at the victory at TSG Hoffenheim last Saturday (3: 0), Hertha’s players followed the goals of the hygiene concept after the goals this time.
Union Berlin has to look down
Hertha got rid of his relegation worries until further notice. Union has to look further down in its Bundesliga premier season, but still has a good cushion.
Labbadia once again relied on a 4-2-3-1 basic order at his home premiere, but called returning Vladimir Darida for Maximilian Mittelstädt in the starting line-up. Union coach Urs Fischer, who had not been on the bench last weekend due to a bereavement in the family, switched to four positions, including defender Neven Subotic initially only on the bench.
A scandal derby such as on November 2, 2019, when the game was about to be stopped and a space storm threatened was ruled out in advance due to the lack of spectators. For a long time, the duel had little to offer in terms of play, just like the encounter at the time.
Hertha tried to control, but struggled against the physically robust and tactically defending Köpenicker. Union, for its part, often used long balls with which Hertha’s defense had little difficulty. Hertha also defended the guests’ counterattacks well.
Hertha overruns Union after the change of sides
After the tough first quarter of an hour, the hosts got their first chance to score. Lukebakio sprinted towards Union goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz, but failed from an acute angle (18th). Shortly afterwards, Cunha checked the Pole with a hoe (27.). Hertha’s creative players Lukebakio and Cunha are far too rarely on the outside lanes.
The derby remained torn apart, nickels and fouls disrupted the flow of the game. Union waited until shortly before the break for the first possibility: Robert Andrich aimed just too high on his free kick from around 20 meters (44.).
After the change of sides, Hertha brought the leadership noticeably more confidence. Ibisevic, who once again preferred Krzysztof Piatek’s winter purchase of millions, met with a copy of his hit in Hoffenheim. Lukebakio completed a counterattack perfectly, after Cunha’s goal the game was decided. Boyata replenished again.
