The number of coronavirus infections in Europe has risen to more than two million. Two thirds of a total of 2,001,995 Corona cases were recorded in Russia, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and France, according to a AFP census, based on Saturday’s agency data. Accordingly, 173,133 infected people died.
Europe is the continent most affected by the pandemic. More than 5.25 million infections and around 339,000 deaths have now been registered worldwide. The number of corona cases worldwide doubled within a month. In the past three days alone, more than 250,000 new infections have been reported.
With almost 336,000 reported infections and 3,388 deaths, Russia has now become a new hotspot for the pandemic. Worldwide, more corona cases were recorded only in the United States. In the United States, more than 1.6 million people have already contracted the novel pathogen, and more than 96,000 people have died.
In Europe, the United Kingdom (257,154 cases and 36,675 deaths), Spain (234,824 cases and 28,628 deaths), Italy (229,327 cases and 32,735 deaths) and France (182,219 cases and 28,289 deaths) were particularly hard hit.
The largest increase in case numbers is currently observed in Latin America and the Caribbean. 33,719 new corona cases were reported there on Friday. The World Health Organization (WHO) called South America the “new epicenter of the disease” on Friday. The situation in Brazil in particular is alarming. According to the authorities, more than 330,000 corona infections have now been detected there.
Experts believe that the officially confirmed numbers only represent a fraction of the actual cases of infection, as there are limited test capacities in many countries or only seriously ill patients are tested for the corona virus.
