Seoul. An infected young man visited three clubs, 26 people were infected. Entertainment facilities in the metropolitan region have to close again. President Moon sees no reason to “stand still for fear”.

After loosening blocking measures against the corona virus in South Korea, there were 26 infections with Sars-CoV-2 among club visitors in Seoul. Seven other cases were linked to entries from abroad on Sunday. For the first time in a month, the number of new coronavirus cases rose to over 30.

The Mayor of Seoul, Park Won Soon, ordered all 2100 nightclubs, hostess bars and discos in the capital to be closed on Saturday. The governor of Gyeonggi Province, Seoul, Lee Jae Myung, joined the measure on Sunday. All entertainment facilities will be affected for two weeks. The province and capital form the Seoul Metropolitan Region, which is home to half of South Korea’s 51 million inhabitants.

President Moon Jae In nevertheless said there was no reason to “stand still for fear”. “The infection cluster that has recently appeared in entertainment facilities has raised awareness that even during the stabilization phase, similar situations can happen anywhere and at any time in closed, crowded rooms,” said President Moon Jae In. “We must never let up on vigilance regarding epidemic prevention.”

Moon said his government would do everything in its power to overcome the “colossal” economic damage caused by the pandemic. “We cannot survive unless we turn this crisis into an opportunity.”

South Korea had gotten the spread of the coronavirus under control with fast and comprehensive measures in an international comparison. The health authority has so far registered 10,894 infections. 256 people died from the virus, 9610 survived Covid-19.

The infection cluster in the Itaewon entertainment district in Seoul was traced back to a 29-year-old man who had visited three clubs before testing positive last week.
