SPD leader Norbert Walter-Borjans considers higher taxes and levies to cope with the corona crisis to be inevitable. If government debt is to be limited, there must be “at least in some areas higher income from taxes and duties,” said Walter-Borjans of the “Passauer Neue Presse” (Friday edition). There is no way around this logic: “Everything else does not go according to Adam Riese.”
The SPD chairman did not provide specific information on the areas and the volume of taxes and duties that could be raised. Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) had ruled out tax increases to finance the enormous consequential costs of the Corona crisis at the present time when she appeared in the Bundestag.
“As of today, there are no plans to increase taxes and duties,” said the Chancellor. Walter-Borjans commented on this with the words: “The Chancellor has declared that this is the ‘status today’.
