According to media reports, the US authorities warn of a possible sharp increase in the number of daily coronavirus deaths in the country. The New York Times reported on Monday a forecast that the number of deaths could increase from currently 1,500 to 2,000 a day to 3,000 in early June. The number of new infections could increase from the current 25,000 to 30,000 to 200,000 daily.
The White House spoke on Monday of an “internal document” from the CDC health agency, which was not coordinated with other authorities and was not submitted to the Coronavirus Task Force. At first it was also unclear which assumptions the model is based on.
Almost 1.2 million coronavirus infections and more than 68,000 deaths have been confirmed in the United States. That is more than in any other country in the world. Even so, some U.S. states have already begun to relax corona restrictions. Experts criticize this as premature and warn of a renewed increase in the number of infections.
US President Donald Trump himself urges a quick return to normalcy in the 2020 election year. On Sunday, he said in a television interview that 100,000 people in the United States could die from the effects of Covid-19 lung disease. Only recently had he named around 60,000 victims – a number that has now been significantly exceeded.
Trump’s government has presented a three-step plan to gradually relax the corona restrictions. However, the states handle these guidelines very differently. Many governors want to boost economic activity as quickly as possible.
