Cologne (SID) – Bundesliga soccer club 1. FC Köln and Belgian midfielder Birger Verstraete go separate ways after just one season. As the club announced on Saturday, Verstraete is moving back home to Royal Antwerp. There he will first play a season on loan, then Antwerp has a purchase option. Verstraete will be released at FC next week to train with his new team.
Verstraete came to Cologne from KAA Gent in the summer of 2019, according to media reports, the rising star transferred 3.5 million euros at the time. However, the midfielder did not meet expectations, at the latest after the change of coach from Achim Beierlorzer to Markus Gisdol in November, Verstraete no longer played a role.
In addition, the 26-year-old had commented critically in May after three Corona cases had been made public at FC, but the team did not then have to be quarantined. Verstraete called this process “bizarre”.
