Washington. In Louisville, protests have been going on for weeks against the death of African-American Breonna Taylor in a police operation: Now a man has been shot in a demonstration against racism. How many shooters there were was initially unclear.
The police said the incident occurred on Saturday evening (local time) in Jefferson Square Park in central Louisville. People had still tried to provide first aid to the man who had been shot, but who had died at the scene. Shortly thereafter, another person was shot nearby.
How many shooters there were was unclear. The police also gave no further information on the victims.
The Mayor of Louisville, Greg Fischer, declared his “deep grief at the violence”. In the run-up to the anti-racism rally, Fischer had asked right-wing counter-demonstrators to stay away from the protest in Jefferson Square Park. Earlier, the local Louisville Courier Journal reported that “armed patriot groups” were planning to counter the anti-racism protesters.
There have been demonstrations in Louisville for weeks against the death of African American Breonna Taylor during a police operation in her own apartment three months ago. The protests were further fueled by the death of Black George Floyd in a brutal police operation in Minneapolis in late May, which sparked mass protests across the country against police violence and racism
