An architectural firm in Feldkirch, Austria, is on a mission to renovate one of the best-known buildings in Braunau am Inn: Adolf Hitler’s ‘birthplace’. For this, a contest had been organized to which proposals from Switzerland and Germany were also presented. According to the Austrian Interior Ministry, the house should become an antithesis of what Hitler stood for. After the renovation, which should be completed in early 2023, the building will be used by the Police. “For some people, the question that probably arises now is: is it really appropriate to assign it to the Police service? It is the most appropriate use that can be made of it. It is worth asking, why? Because the Police are trying to safeguard the right and freedom “, declares Karl Nehammer, Minister of the Interior of Austria. The established plan is to renovate the house and restore it to its original condition, and also add two new buildings. The complex should be integrated into the image projected by the suburbs of Braunau am Inn. The commemorative monolith that remembers the consequences of Nazi rule, in front of the house, will be removed and placed elsewhere. The renovation is estimated to cost around five million euros.
