MILAN – If it is true that Hollywood focuses on remakes, sequels and franchises playing on the nostalgia effect, even the small screen is no different. Proof of this is the reboot of Perry Mason registered HBO. The defense attorney born from Erle Stanley Gardner’s pen appeared in over eighty books and short stories. An editorial cult, an integral part of our popular culture – Ozzy Osbourne dedicated a song to him (!) – thanks also to the series of adaptations for cinema and TV that have followed over the years. By Raymond Burr protagonist of the TV series of the same name that aired on CBS from 1957 to 1966 in Monte Markham in the seventies in the center of The New Parry Mason up to the 1930s film series starring Warren William.

The new face of the defense attorney? Matthew Rhys that, take off the shoes of the Russian spy of The Americans, returns to the small screen in a production that was already rumored in 2016. At the time, Robert Downey Jr. should have played Perry Mason and Nic Pizzolatto to write the screenplay. But True Detective got the better of it and the project was shelved. Today Downey Jr. has remained in production but as an executive producer with Susan Downey while Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald (Friday Night Lights) had the arduous task of writing the new chapter in Mason’s story.
Tatiana Maslany is Sister Alice
Set in 1932 Los Angeles, Perry Mason he tells of the country’s attempt to leave the Great Depression behind while the city of angels was crossed by a new fervor, including the Olympic games, the golden age of Hollywood and a new economic expansion given by oil. The intricate case of the kidnapping of a child who will bring the defense attorney on the trail of a popular evangelist, Sister Alice (Tatiana Maslany), fits into this frame. A sort of origin story of the character created by Erle Stanley Gardner that will show their darkest in the city focusing on Mason’s life as a private investigator.

«They are all guilty» sentenced Mason in the trailer of the series accompanied by the blues saxophone by Life In A Glasshouse of Radiohead. Perry Mason it will therefore bring out the secrets of a city and, unlike the series of the past, it will not focus on a new case for each episode. A crime story with a noir atmosphere that pays homage to the classics of the genre and in which we will find some of the historical characters of Gardner’s novels. From Mason’s trusted secretary, Della Street (Juliet Rylance) to private investigator Paul Drake (Chris Chalk). In the cast of Perry Mason, broadcast overseas from 21 June under the direction of Tim Vab Patten (The Sopranos, Game of thrones) and Deniz Gamze Ergüven (Mustang), also John Lithgow as Elias Birchard “E.B.” Jonathan and Shea Whigham in those of Pete Strickland.
