Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier (CDU) has warned of the far-reaching consequences of corona spreading in the United States for the global economy. “I am very concerned about the increasing number of new infections in the USA,” said Altmaier of the “Bild am Sonntag”. “A pandemic that is getting out of control there has major consequences for the global economy.”
At the same time, the minister criticized US President Donald Trump’s decision to buy remdesivir on a large scale for corona patients in the United States. “Going it alone in the fight against Corona will not help anyone,” said Altmaier. “Buying out markets and monopolizing vaccines is a particularly bad idea.” Perhaps the actions of the US government should “only distract from the big problems in their own country”.
Altmaier warned that the global community can only fight the new corona virus together. “Hopefully the American President knows that too.”
Remdesivir was actually developed by the US company Gilead for the treatment of Ebola. After the United States and Japan, the EU has also approved the drug for the treatment of corona patients. The EU-wide supply of the drug is questionable. The US government announced a few days ago that it had secured almost all of the drug’s production for the next few months.
The United States is the country most affected by the corona pandemic, with more than 2.8 infections identified and nearly 130,000 infected.
