The Polish Iga Swiatek (WTA 49) won the Elle Spirit Open exhibition tournament in Montreux.
While the favorite, Elina Svitolina (WTA 5), had been eliminated Friday by the Swiss Simona Waltert (6-2 7-5), Iga Swiatek took the opportunity to win the Elle Spirit Open tournament in Montreux ($ 70,000 “Prize money”). For its fourth edition, the WTA tournament, which should have been canceled due to the coronavirus, had opted for a new concept in the form of an exhibition of only three days.
The Polish, ranked 49th in the world and winner of the tournament in 2018, won the final against the Swiss Viktorija Golubic (WTA 123) on Sunday afternoon (6-2 6-2). In the morning, Swiatek easily beat 19-year-old Grisons Simona Waltert 6-4 6-0 in the semi-finals. In the other half, Jill Teichmann (WTA 56) lost to Viktorija Golubic 7-6 3-6 10-6. Despite some shortcomings in service, in particular, the two Swiss women delivered an intense duel. Teichmann, however, lacked lucidity on important points.
