LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Graham Zusi put the needle on in stoppage time and Kansas City Sporting beat the Colorado Rapids 3-2 on Friday night.
Jonathan Lewis scored in the 84th minute to allow the Rapids to tie the game, after Alan Pulido’s penalty gave Sporting a 2-1 lead in the 72nd minute of play.
The Rapids had to contend with nine players due to two red cards in the second half.
The Colorado troop quickly took the lead when Kellyn Acosta hit the mark in the sixth minute.
In the 61st minute, Rapids player Danny Wilson shot Khiry Shelton as he ran for the net. After a video replay, Wilson received a red card and was evicted.
A few minutes later, Shelton leveled the score from a difficult angle with a shot that lodged in the far corner of the net.
A controversial hand in Diego Rubio gave Pulido a penalty, which gave Sporting a 2-1 lead.
Moments later, Jack Price was sent off due to yet another red card for the Rapids after he appeared to say something to the referee.
Sporting had to play without goalkeeper Tim Melia, who received a red card in the last game. Richard Sanchez replaced him.
The two teams started their season with two wins before the COVID-19 pandemic forced play to an end. They then lost their first game of this MLS revival tournament.
