How many people will be able to live on Mars? This is the number to survive, keep life and research running on the red planet.

How many people will be able to live on Mars? This is a question that many ask about the possibility of being able to travel to the red planet.

A university professor asked himself the question and answers with a figure that would keep life on Mars and the investigations working.

Life on Mars, far from being something like the supersonic ones, will be something more like The Martian, where researchers will have to do various practices on the planet in order to know it better.

Jean-Marc Salotti, a professor at the National Polytechnic Institute of Bordeaux (INP), wanted to take the assumptions and scenarios that the researchers had already discussed about the possibility of establishing a “scientific city”.

WHAT ARE THE BASES OF THE INVESTIGATION?

To do so, Salotti began with the simple statement that, in order to survive, the working time required to satisfy all necessary needs must be less than the working time capacity of individuals.

Taking into account the productivity of residents of different ages and giving time to sleep, eat, hygiene and rest, the annual work capacity is estimated at 31.25 percent of the annual life time.

As you can imagine, for a smaller group of people, the demand in some areas may be less, but the group of people between which tasks can be divided also decreases.

The shaking of demand and the division on which survival depends is understood by Salotti in the “sharing factor”.

HUMANS CANNOT BE SEPARATED

“If each settler was completely isolated and it was not possible to share, each individual would have to carry out all the activities,” Salotti wrote in an article published in Scientific Reports.

«[Pero] more people make it possible to be more efficient through specialization and implement other industries that allow the use of more efficient tools. ”

For some activities, such as water management, the sharing factor is high, as although much effort is required, everyone can benefit, while for others, such as agriculture, the sharing factor is relatively weak.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL BE ABLE TO LIVE ON MARS?

Combining the various exchange factors in each domain with a previously formulated plan for survival on Mars, the scientist proposes a number and it is 110 people.

Obviously, this is not an exact science, and various assumptions were made along the way, but, to Salotti’s knowledge, it was the first quantitative evaluation of its kind.

“Our method allows for simple comparisons, opening the debate on the best strategy for survival and the best place to succeed,” Salotti wrote.
