ROME (AP) – For the fifth consecutive day, the number of new coronavirus cases in Italy increased on Saturday.
The Italian Health Ministry said 235 new cases of coronavirus infections were recorded from the previous day. Altogether, Italy’s number of confirmed cases of coronavirus is 241,000, although authorities have said that probably not many people who were infected and developed mild symptoms or none were counted.
The northern Emilia-Romagna region registered a significant increase in infections, from 27 to 51, at a time when its coastal towns attract tourists.
The Lazio region, which includes Rome, also had a large increase in confirmed cases, with 31 compared to 11 the day before. The city has tried to discourage youth groups from gathering outside on summer nights to drink without keeping a safe distance, in addition to not wearing face masks.
21 deaths were reported nationwide, bringing the country’s total figure to 34,854.
