BVB newcomer Thomas Meunier is not allowed to play with the former PSG Champions League club and is primarily responsible for one person.
BVB newcomer Thomas Meunier has sharply criticized ex-club Paris Saint-Germain.
Reason: The Parisians, despite Borussia Dortmund’s willingness, refused to allow Meunier to participate in the Champions League tournament. The 28-year-old Belgian PSG sports director Leonardo made sure that it happened.
“Leonardo never made an agreement with BVB, let alone with me! He wanted me to appear for PSG practically free of charge,” said Meunier in an interview with the German press agency (dpa) with reference to a failure to agree on a rental fee or underwriting aspects.
Instead of appearing again in the Champions League with the French, he was denied entry to the club site by lawyer’s letter, Meunier reported. His attempt to train on the premises again after a four-month break was also refused.
BVB star Marco Reus played for Borussia in his youth. After seven years in Ahlen and Mönchengladbach, the 30-year-old returned to his childhood sweetheart in 2012
The BVB dream elf of the national player is a mixture of companions and youth idols. SPORT1 shows who the offensive star calls in his desired selection
TOR – STEFAN KLOS: Reus describes the 1997 Champions League winner as an “absolute legend”. The offensive player even owned a shirt of the 48-year-old as a child
RIGHT DEFENSE – LUKASZ PISZCZEK: The Polish defensive man came to Dortmund from Hertha in 2010 as a striker – and has remained loyal to Borussia to this day
INTERNAL DEFENSE – JULIO CESAR: Reus describes the Brazilian as a “tree in defense”. With Dortmund, the now 57-year-old was twice German champion and in 1997 won the Champions League together with goalkeeper Stefan Klos
INTERNAL DEFENSE – MATTHIAS SAMMER: The European champion from 1996 is a “figure of identification”, says Reus. Consequently, the master coach from 2002 and former Bayern sports director completes his dream central defense
LEFT DEFENSE – DEDE: The left foot worked the BVB’s outer track for 12 years. In 2011 he ended his career with the black and yellow team. “Unfortunately, I never played with him,” Reus regrets
CENTRAL FIELD – NURI SAHIN: As a 16-year-old, the Sahin made her debut at Borussia in 2005 – and is still the youngest Bundesliga player of all time. Fence guest back then in professional training: the young Marco Reus. The midfield engine shone especially in the 2011 championship year under coach Jürgen Klopp
CENTRAL MIDDLE FIELD – MICHAEL ZORC: “If you don’t take it with you, you mustn’t put up any,” says Reus about the 57-year-old. Zorc played 462 league games for Borussia, was an extremely safe penalty taker. Today he is BVB sports director, with whom Reus “does not want to ingratiate himself” with his nomination, as he makes it clear
RIGHT OFFENSIVE – JAKUB BLASZCZYKOWSKI: “Kuba”, which Reus ran into as an opponent with Mönchengladbach, completes the Polish duo on the right. “It was the most unpleasant duo for years,” says the 30-year-old with respect
OFFENSIVE MIDDLE FIELD – TOMAS ROSICKY: The Czech game designer of the master team in 2002 had been “absolute favorite player” to Reus’ childhood, the ex-Gladbacher recalls. However, the highly talented kicker repeatedly injured both at Borussia and later at Arsenal
LEFT OFFENSIVE – MARIO GÖTZE: “Outstanding!” This is how Reus describes his teammate – but before Götze moved to Bavaria when he was 20. But the 2014 World Cup final scorer found his way back to BVB. However, Borussia plans beyond the summer without him
CENTER FOREST – STEPHANE CHAPUISAT: In attack, Reus puts the Swiss razor-thin in front of BVB legend Karl-Heinz Riedle. Chapuisat and Riedle formed one of the most feared storm duos in Europe at the end of the 1990s
“Then I was told by phone that I shouldn’t cross the path of whoever because I could tell disturbing stories. Typical case of loss of reality,” said Meunier.
Meunier defends himself: “That’s not true”
He added: “Leonardo told the press in France that I had refused to extend the contract. But that’s not true, I want to make it very clear.”
Meunier moved from Paris to Dortmund on a free transfer after having previously eliminated the black and yellow team in the round of 16 of the Champions League with the French. In the quarter-finals PSG will now face Atalanta Bergamo without Meunier.
