The landing authorization for migrants aboard the Talia merchant ship arrives from Malta. Shortly after 10 pm, the search and rescue coordination center authorized the disembarkation of the 50 people who were still on board the Lebanese flag cargo and that the Valletta authorities had not wanted to land for days. Operations are still ongoing.
Only two migrants had been authorized in recent days to go down because they were considered to be in real danger of life.
The freighter had rescued 52 people on July 3 without food or water.
The government of Malta in recent days had communicated that it will not allow the castaways to dock until it has guarantees from other EU Member States on their immediate relocation. On July 3, Alarm Phone, the NGO that reports inflatable boats, had issued the first alarm. Then relaunched by the Italian Mediterranea Saving Humans and the German NGO Sea Watch.
