The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, ordered this Saturday to have military planes and helicopters ready to combat a locust plague that has been detected in several areas of the country and that threatens to devour cultivated areas.

“If we do not become more aggressive in looking for (the locust) and even if we control one hundred percent of the plague in our territory and a locust herd comes from Guatemala or Honduras, we have to be ready to eliminate them on the first day and that is only going to be able to be done with helicopters and (military) planes, ”Bukele said at a press conference.

The president visited this Saturday a zone of basic grain crops such as corn in the department of San Vicente (east), to verify the search and fight against lobster carried out by technicians from the Ministry of Agriculture together with soldiers.

Bukele explained that in addition to the military planes and helicopters that are being adapted to carry out fumigation work against locusts, there are also drones ready to carry out the same task, in addition to the military personnel who already carry out this task on foot with the use of equipment. portable spraying.

So far, the Ministry of Agriculture has not specified the amount of cultivated area that has been affected by the flying insect pest, which in some areas has still been covered in an embryonic state.

The authorities have discovered the presence of lobster in basic grain cultivation areas in the department of San Vicente (east) and in some parts of the department of La Paz (southeast), in addition to other outbreaks in the coastal area of ​​the department of Ahuachapán (southwest ).

The president also ordered the Ministry of Health, Agriculture and Defense to maintain strict controls in the border areas with Guatemala and Honduras to try to detect the entry of eventual lobster sleeves.

The Salvadoran president assured that his government will provide financial compensation to farmers whose crops are damaged by fumigation work against lobster.

“We have to have all the helicopters and all the planes spraying and ending the plague, a cautious country is worth two, we have to finish what we find,” said the president.
