Record number of hospitalizations in Los Angeles, crisis worsens in Florida

It is by far the most affected country in the world in absolute terms. The United States have, for the seventh consecutive day, recorded more than 60,000 new cases of contamination coronavirus in 24 hours, according to the count made Monday evening by Johns Hopkins University.

The 61,288 new infections recorded in one day bring the total number of positive cases in the country to more than 3.82 million since the start of the pandemic. The Covid-19 also caused the death of 448 people in 24 hours, for a total of 140,922 deaths, according to the university based in Baltimore, whose reports refer.

The United States has recorded more than 60,000 new cases every day for a week, with a peak of 77,638 cases on Friday. The outbreak of infections is particularly important in the south and west of the country. The number of Covid-19 patients hospitalized in Los Angeles, California, thus reached a new record this weekend.

California: young adults particularly affected

Los Angeles County, which represents ten million inhabitants alone, recorded 2216 patients hospitalized after contracting the coronavirus on Sunday, against 2193 on July 15, the date of the previous record. Among the patients currently hospitalized, 26% are in an intensive care unit and 19% have been placed on a ventilator, underline the health authorities, who are particularly concerned about the high rate of infection of young adults.

“At the moment, young adults are hospitalized at a rate never seen before,” noted the county public health director, Barbara Ferrer, before warning this category of the population: “As young as you are, you are vulnerable to this virus “. According to official figures, more than half of 2,848 new Covid-19 cases identified on Sunday involved patients 40 years of age or younger.

The record of hospitalizations was accompanied in California by a series of cases of severe inflammatory syndrome affecting children. Fifteen of them were diagnosed last week after developing this multisystemic inflammatory syndrome, linked to infection with the coronavirus. Nationally, this syndrome has already caused the death of six children.

In Florida, another focus of the epidemic on American soil, more than 9,500 people suffering from Covid-19 were in hospital on Monday, with more than 10,300 new cases identified in 24 hours, and more than 5,000 deaths in total since the start of the pandemic. On Monday, there were only 18% of the beds available in intensive care units in this state.

Criticized for his management of the health crisis and in particular his refusal to order the general wearing of masks, the governor of Florida Ron DeSantis called on his people to do a serological test and donate their plasma if they had any antibodies. According to some experts, this plasma transfusion could help patients with the most severe forms of Covid-19 to fight infection.
