The President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella and his Slovenian counterpart Borut Pahor met in the barracks of the Piedmont Cavalry Regiment at Villa Opicina, on the Trieste Karst. It is the first stop on a historic visit. It is the fifteenth time that the two presidents have met. Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio – arrived a few minutes earlier -, the president of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, Massimiliano Fedriga, the prefect, welcomed President Mattarella upon his arrival. of Trieste, Valerio Valenti, and the mayor of the city, Roberto Dipiazza. Subsequently, President Mattarella welcomed his counterpart Borut Pahor, who arrived shortly after 11, and together they reviewed the picket of honor. Both, as well as all the staff, wear the mask. The visit includes the deposition of a wreath by both of them at the foiba di Basovizza and then to the Slovenian war memorial. Finally, the presidents will move to the prefecture in Trieste where they will meet the writer Boris Pahor to whom honors will be conferred. Mattarella and Pahor will be together with Narodni dom, which will be returned to the Slovenian community in Italy, exactly one hundred years after the fire of 13 July 1920 which destroyed it. Finally, the Italian Head of State will meet representatives of the associations of exiles in the Region.
