The third of the five wind turbines planned for the Gotthard wind farm was installed on Thursday. The facility is expected to start producing power in early November.
The Gotthard is one of the few places in Ticino that is suitable for the installation of a wind farm, according to the site of Azienda Elettrica Ticinese (AET), which launched the project. At 2130 meters above sea level, the wind is strong enough to produce energy. In addition, there is already an adequate infrastructure and a suitable electricity network on the pass.
The wind farm should be able to start operating on an experimental basis in mid-September, said Pietro Jolli, AET’s communications manager, at Keystone-ATS. It is expected to be completed by mid-October and produce power for the first time in early November.
Composed of five wind turbines, it should produce up to 20 gigawatt hours of electricity per year, covering the needs of some 5,000 households. The AET holds 70% of the shares in the park, the Industrial Services of Geneva 25% and the Ticino municipality of Airolo 5%.
