August 5 is the 217th day of the year on the Gregorian calendar (218th in leap years). On this day the infectious disease Oswaldo Cruz, the actress Nathalia Timberg, the astronaut Neil Armstrong, and the musician João Barone were born.
It was on August 5, 1955, at the age of 46, that actress and singer Carmen Miranda died. Of Portuguese nationality, she lived in Brazil since she was ten months old. His artistic career took place in Brazil and the United States between the 1930s and 1950s. He worked on radio, magazine theater, cinema and television. It was considered by the magazine Rolling Stone as the 15th largest voice in Brazilian music, being an international icon and symbol of Brazil abroad. Nicknamed “Brazilian Bombshell”, Miranda is known for her exotic costumes and hat with fruits that she used to wear in her American films, which made them her trademark.
The day was also marked when in 2010 the accident occurred at the San José mine, trapping 33 Chilean miners approximately 700 meters below ground for 69 days. The rescue work started the next day, having been carried out by a group that created a ventilation duct. A further collapse occurred two days later, August 7, now requiring heavy machinery to complete the rescue. On Sunday, August 22, the miners were found alive, favoring a more motivating rescue, where it was estimated that they could only leave there at the end of 2010, as they would have to cross a large rock. The workers stayed 17 days without contact with the rescue personnel. On October 12 at 23:55 local time, the process of removing workers began through the capsule Fenix II.
