Belgium rejects the extradition of the Catalan Puig

(ANSA-AFP) – BRUSSELS, AUGUST 07 – The Belgian justice has rejected the extradition request of the former Catalan minister Luis Puig, believing that the European arrest warrant issued by the Spanish authorities was invalid, because those authorities did not have any competence. Spain has issued European arrest warrants against former Catalan minister-president Carles Puigdemont and former ministers Lluis Puig and Toni Comin due to their involvement in the Catalan independence referendum on 1 October 2017. The three are accused in Spain of sedition, disobedience and embezzlement of government money and have been living in Belgium since late 2017. Puigdemont and Comin, elected MEPs, are covered by immunity. (ANSA-AFP).
