The Belgium rejects the extradition request of former Catalan Minister Luis Puig: the European arrest warrant issued by the Spanish authorities is not valid according to Brussels, whose justice therefore declares itself incompetent.
Spain has issued European arrest warrants against former Catalan president, Carles Puigdemont, the ex Minister Toni Comin and Puig himself because of their involvement in referendum on Catalan independence, dated 2017.
Since then, the three parliamentarians have lived in Belgium: at home, they are accused of disobedience, embezzlement of government money and sedition.
Puigdemont and Comin, elected MEPs, are covered by immunity.
However, the Belgian Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that there is an opportunity to challenge this decision.
