The release of a Swiss arrested in Minsk was on the menu of an exchange between the head of Swiss diplomacy Ignazio Cassis and his Belarusian counterpart Uladzimir Makej on Friday.
Belarus said it was ready for a constructive and objective dialogue with foreign countries, following a telephone exchange on Friday between the Swiss foreign minister Ignazio Cassis and his counterpart Uladzimir Makej. In particular, it was the release of Tanguy Darbellay, a Valaisan arrested in Minsk.
In a tweet, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs specifies that “the two parties are doing their utmost to ensure that the Swiss arrested during the demonstrations in Belarus is freed as soon as possible”. The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also mentioned the meeting in a statement, without however mentioning the young wrestler from Valais.

The conversation focused on the recent presidential election in Belarus and the current situation in the country, the statement said. “The Belarusian side is ready for a constructive and objective dialogue with its foreign partners on all questions related to the unfolding of events in Belarus during the electoral campaign and after its completion”, adds Belarusian diplomacy.
Mr. Makej thanked Switzerland for ensuring security and order at the polling station at the Belarusian embassy in Switzerland.
“He is fine”
Swiss diplomacy has been active for several days to free the young 21-year-old Valais wrestler arrested Monday in the Belarusian capital Minsk, as part of the protests against the results of the presidential election. She is following the file with “high priority”. State Secretary Krystyna Marty Lang had already discussed the case on Tuesday with Belarusian Deputy Foreign Minister Oleg Kravchenko.
According to the wrestler’s father, Christian Darbellay quoted in Le Nouvelliste, his son is “apparently well”. “A priori, Tanguy was arrested by a first policeman who let him pass. Another searched him and a third arrested him while he was on his way home, ”says the father.
