Joe Biden will be officially designated as the Democratic candidate for the White House at an unprecedented virtual convention that will begin on Monday and that, like the primaries and presidential campaign in the United States, has been reduced due to the pandemic.
The event will take place without the presence of an audience, without balloons, without applause and without the candidate, who will speak again during the convention, which aims to stimulate the Democratic bases within three months of the elections.
Along with running mate Kamala Harris, the first black candidate for vice presidency for one of the major American parties, Biden seeks to unify the Democrats.
From his residence in Delaware, Biden will deliver a speech on Thursday to accept the candidacy, a message with which he will try to motivate a country that is facing both a health crisis, an economic devastation and a profound reflection on racial inequalities.
Democrats have announced that no speaker will attend the convention scheduled for August 17-20 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a key state to win the White House.
For the city, which had been preparing for the event for several months, the news was a blow.
As of Friday, the streets of downtown Milwaukee were mostly empty and residents were sorry for the party that is not going to happen.
“I thought it would be good for the city and we all thought so,” said Dan, who did not reveal his last name because he works for the security forces.
“It was a bad year,” he added, through his mask.
Biden, 77, will speak on the last night of the event, thousands of miles away.
The controversy started this week by Trump, who made a false claim that Kamala Harris could not run for vice president because his parents are immigrants, will certainly be addressed at the convention.
One of the attractions of the convention, which will be shown during prime time on TV in the United States, will be the presence of former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.
On Monday, the first night of the event, the main moment will be the speech of the former first lady, which will happen after a marathon of meetings, which include meetings of the League of Hispanic Congressmen, of the women of the party, as well as of the Democratic youth.
The television broadcast will begin at 8:00 pm local time (10:00 pm Brasília time) and should end two hours later.
Another important figure on the first night is Senator Bernie Sanders, who ran Biden in the primaries and announced his withdrawal in April.
Joe Biden wants to avoid the mistakes of the 2016 campaign, when a dispute between Hillary Clinton and Sanders supporters hurt the party.
To this end, the campaign sought out the most progressive voices identified with Sanders to project a union against Republican Trump.
Among this group, the main attraction is Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, although the program only allocates one minute for her, which generated controversy during the week on social networks.
Biden’s wife, Jill, former President Bill Clinton and 2016 candidate Hillary are also expected to speak.
The convention will also reserve a special place for a key sector that Democrats are trying to win over to the White House: repentant Republicans, with former Ohio Governor John Kasich as their representative.

Christopher Arterton, professor emeritus at George Washington University, stressed that the lack of face-to-face elements at the convention is “sad”, but understandable given the seriousness of the pandemic.
The analyst pointed out that there are critical components of the conventions that can be marked, such as internal negotiations and discussions.
Democrats did not choose Wisconsin on the case, as in 2016 Trump won a surprisingly small victory in the state, which added to other positive results in the region led him to the White House.
This time, Democrats want to mobilize black voters who opted to abstain four years ago and also want to win back farmers, without forgetting voters in the suburbs.
Trump used the fact that the convention took place virtually to claim that Democrats “once again ignore the wonderful people of Wisconsin.
And he announced that he would be coming to the state on Monday to deliver a speech on “Joe Biden’s failures in the areas of jobs and economics”.
Trump will not attend the Republican convention, scheduled for August 24-27, and will accept the party’s nomination in a location yet to be defined.
