A lightning strike on the tracks of the funicular that connects Lourdes, the city in the French Pyrenees, a pilgrimage destination, to the Pic du Jer, caused a sharp braking of the wagons on Monday afternoon and the fall of passengers. Twelve of them were injured, including a 3-month-old baby. A couple, in serious condition, were immediately transported to the Lourdes hospital.
The funicular is famous in the area as it allows you to admire the Pyrenees from the heights that surround the city of the cave of the Apparitions.
The abrupt interruption of electricity, caused by the lightning strike on the tracks, caused a sudden stop and a violent jolt inside the convoy, which was in the process of descending. About fifteen people ended up on the ground. The two most seriously injured are a couple in their fifties. An investigation has been opened on the incident.
