If we have talked about the stay of the reyes Felipe and Letizia in Mallorca it is somewhat atypical, that of the Queen Sofia It is no less so, since it has practically disappeared since it arrived on the island at the end of July. Your holidays this year are being very different, for two main reasons. On the one hand, the coronavirus, which has also marked the agenda of the Kings. On the other, the scandals starring him King Juan Carlos and its consequences, after which the queen emerita herself has also been the focus of media attention. For now, the late arrival Queen Sofia’s already indicated that it was not going to be a ‘normal’ holiday, since in previous summers she had been in Marivent since the beginning of July or even, on some occasions, since the end of June. And at this point in August, her appearances had already been numerous, counting both more official and unofficial appointments: outings with their granddaughters to the movies, family dinners, shopping, or the traditional reception to the Balearic authorities, which he always attends. But this year, she has only been seen once, shopping with her sister Irene, a company that does remain unchanged for her stay on the island, whatever the circumstances of each summer.

His attendance to one of his unavoidable appointments is not even confirmed, today, the concert to benefit Proyecto Hombre, which each year presides over the Cathedral of Palma. It is true that the circumstances of this year’s recital are different: the traditional recital could not be held last April – it usually coincides with Monday or Tuesday of Holy Week-, so the Balearic Symphony Orchestra has decided to donate the proceeds of the concert that they will offer this Friday to the organization. Since it is not properly promoted by Proyecto Hombre, Doña Sofía’s presence is not expected and, to attend, it would only be in a personal capacity.

Of course, the press that has traveled to the island does not lose hope of see the queen emerita with Felipe, Letizia and their daughters. “It has to show up at some point,” they say. And they look askance at the weekend when the Kings’ agenda is blank and it is expected that there will be some surprise departure to which the emeritus queen will join, in what is her most atypical and, above all, discreet vacation. And it is that Doña Sofía is following the line of silence he has had in recent months, with only two public appointments.

In both cases, they were appointments related to the Reina Sofía Foundation, without a press call and of which only a few images were distributed. With the question of what will happen to queen sofia after the exile of King Juan Carlos in the air, these two commitments seemed a prelude to what his future will be in the institution, with a presence and weight within the Crown less and less. Thus, it seems that King Philip’s mother is having her particular ‘exile’ from public life, which is being carried out very quietly and more than discreetly.
