Professional cyclist Fabio Jakobsen is fighting for his life after a horror fall. On the first anniversary of the death of Belgian Bjorg Lambrecht, the Tour of Poland was again overshadowed by a serious accident. In the final of the first stage, the Dutchman Jakobsen brutally raced into the barriers at around 80 km / h on Wednesday. The 23-year-old was flown to the hospital without consciousness, according to the doctors there is a risk to life.
“It is serious, his life is in direct danger. He has lost an enormous amount of blood and suffered serious injuries,” said racing doctor Barbara Jerschina at Polsat Sport. As a hospital spokesman in Sosnowiec announced, Jakobsen was operated on by orthopedic surgeons and oral surgeons. According to media reports, the two-time Vuelta stage winner of the previous year had been intubated in the finish area and was in a coma.
In the sprint for the win, the Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma) cleared his compatriot from the Deceuninck-Quick Step team shortly before the finish line at top speed – both were clearly ahead of the rest of the drivers. Jakobsen plunged right into the barrier and crashed into a photographer. Groenewegen also flew off the bike, but was the first to cross the finish line. However, the jumbo professional was disqualified after a short time and Jakobsen was declared the winner of the race – but that was absolutely secondary.
Jacobsen’s French team-mate Florian Senechal tweeted a picture of his own blood-soaked gloves and wrote: “I was the first to help Fabio to hold his head. If you look at this picture, you can understand the shock of this accident was. Stay strong, my friend! ” Senechal deleted the tweet a little later.
The pictures of the accident were terrible enough: Various other drivers crashed in the Katowice finale, some spectacularly over flying grids. The target area immediately adjacent to the railroad tracks was like a battlefield, several ambulances stopped at the finish line.
Colleagues and participants expressed harsh criticism on social media – Groenewegen as well as the organizers. “It was a criminal act by Groenewegen. He should be put in jail for that, I would go to court for that,” tweeted Jakobsen’s team principal Patrick Lefevere.
Simon Geschke, who was not directly affected like the other German professionals, wrote: “Every year the same stupid downhill sprint on the Tour of Poland. Every year I wonder why the organizers think it’s a good idea. Mass sprints are dangerous enough, you don’t need a downhill final at 80 km / h! “
Jakobsen’s accident brutally reminded another: On August 5, 2019, the Belgian Lambrecht crashed into a concrete pillar in the rain on the 3rd stage of the Tour de Pologne and later died in the hospital. The Lotto Soudal young professional was only 22 years old.
At the end of the opening section between Chorzow and Katowice, the German professionals had already raised their legs. John Degenkolb was more than a minute ago, top sprinter Pascal Ackermann had gone into the wind too early and was not at the front as usual – it was probably his great luck.
