Shortly before the end of the summer vacation in six federal states, Minister of Education Anja Karliczek (CDU) for a mask requirement in the school buildings. It is “understandable if countries want to forego distance rules in schools, because the spatial conditions would otherwise only allow limited attendance classes,” said Karliczek WELT AM SONNTAG.

“Nevertheless, classroom instruction will only work if further regulations on hygiene, wearing protective masks and keeping a distance in the schoolyard and in the hallways are strictly observed.” Berlin, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg have one Mask requirement already introduced.

The education ministers of the federal states were optimistic that the agreed regular operation can succeed under pandemic conditions. “Tourism, restaurants and even fitness studios have long been reopened without any major problems,” said Mecklenburg-West Pomerania’s Minister of Education Bettina Martin (SPD). “It is high time to move children’s concerns forward.” Also Hamburg’s Senator for Education Ties Rabe (SPD) pushes for normality. “The months before the summer holidays were still bearable, and there are no more lessons lost. If the schools are closed again, I am sure that the pupils will have significant educational problems, ”he said WELT AM SONNTAG.

“Classroom instruction is and remains the best form of learning for our students – and the best job for our teachers,” said North Rhine-Westphalian Minister of Education Yvonne Gebauer (FDP). Schlewig-Holstein also wants to stick to everyday school life as much as possible. “Classroom instruction is a priority for us, and if the pandemic should make school closures necessary again, then regionally and for a limited time and not across the board as in the previous school year,” said Minister of Education Karin Prien (CDU).
